Steel frame cabins: the differences that matter

A steel cabin has a structural steel frame — ours is galvanised and bolted — with walls of sandwich panels: an insulating foam core between two steel skins. There is no timber to rot, nothing to swell or warp in the wet, and the frame is strong enough to be lifted by crane every time the cabin moves.

Timber cabins need regular treatment to keep rot out. One-piece GRP cabins are seamless and rot-proof, but the largest single moulding is 2.7 × 2.7 m. Steel cabins go much bigger — up to 3 × 12 m or 4 × 12 m to order — which makes them the choice for offices, canteens, welfare and accommodation.

Upkeep is simple: wash the panels down now and then, keep the roof and gutters clear, check door and window seals once a year, and touch up any deep scratch so bare steel is not left exposed.

Steel cabin prices

Every price is ex works, + VAT, for a new steel cabin with its door and windows fitted; the 3 × 4 m to 3 × 7 m cabins also come with double-glazed PVC windows, lights and sockets. Delivery by crane lorry is quoted for your postcode in your written quote; add any size to your quote basket and send an inquiry.

The two smaller panel cabins suit a steel security cabin or a one-desk office; the larger cabins are full-size steel offices, canteens and welfare rooms. For smaller panel sizes from 1.1 × 1.1 m, see panel cabins.

Choosing between them comes down to people and services. One person at a gate needs a small panel cabin; a team that needs desks, a table and a toilet needs a 3 × 7 m cabin with WC. If you are unsure, send us the headcount and what happens inside, and we suggest a size in your written quote.

Steel cabin kits

Because the frame is bolted, not welded, our full-size steel cabins can also be supplied as a kit: floor and roof frames, corner posts, steel-faced wall panels, windows and a door, packed flat for transport and bolted together on site.

Kits suit multi-cabin orders and sites a crane lorry can't easily reach, and they make it simple to take a cabin down and rebuild it somewhere else. The full guide, with prices and what comes in the box, is on our flat pack cabins page.

If you expect to move the cabin often, say so in your inquiry. We suggest whether assembled or kit delivery suits your plans, and show the layout on the drawing we send with your quote.

  • Same specification as an assembled cabin
  • Dismantle, move and re-use many times
  • Materials 100% recyclable at the end of their life

Anti-vandal and steel security cabin options

An anti-vandal cabin is a steel cabin built to be left unattended: skins that take a knock, a strong locked door and protected windows. Our standard cabins start with steel-faced panels on a galvanised frame, a lockable door and PVC double-glazed windows.

For sites that stand empty at night, ask about security options in your inquiry. We confirm which of the features below we can fit to your cabin and price them on your quote. For guard posts, a small steel panel cabin or a security hut is the usual choice; where the threat includes firearms, our bulletproof cabins are armoured to BR7.

What to look for in any anti-vandal cabin:

  • Skins: steel-faced walls and roof, not timber or plastic.
  • Windows: shutters or grilles on every window, locked from inside.
  • Door: a steel door and frame with a robust lock.
  • Fixings: no external bolts or hinges that can be undone from outside.
  • Services: cables and pipes brought in low and protected, not run along the outside.

Steel cabin uses across industries

Steel cabins do the same job in very different places. The frame and panels stay the same; the layout, glazing and fit-out change.

Delivery, base and installation

Assembled steel cabins travel on a lorry with its own crane (HIAB). The driver lifts the cabin straight onto your base, so most are in place and ready quickly. You need clear access for the lorry and no overhead cables near the lift.

The base should be firm and level: level concrete pads or a concrete slab. Bolt small cabins down on exposed sites. An electrician then connects the supply, and WC cabins are connected to water and drainage.

We send a written quote and drawing by email and confirm the lead time in your written quote. Kits are assembled on site instead — see flat pack cabins.

Why buy a steel cabin direct

Our products are used in over 140 countries. Production is ISO 9001:2015 and CE certified.

The frame is galvanised steel, the wall skins are finished in RAL 9002 electrostatic powder coat using automotive painting technology, and the panels carry up to 60% more insulation than standard panels. Every cabin has a 12-month warranty against manufacturing and assembly faults.

How they're built

Galvanised steel, sandwich panels, double glazing.

Every cabin starts with a bolted galvanised steel frame, 50 mm eps sandwich panel (pur option) walls and a 125 mm EPS roof, finished with PVC double-glazed windows.

Straight answers

Questions buyers ask us

How much does a steel cabin cost?

From £3,290 + VAT for a 3 × 4 m steel cabin, £3,490 + VAT for a 2.4 × 6 m site office and £4,290 + VAT for a 3 × 7 m open-plan office. Delivery is quoted by postcode.

Will a steel cabin rust?

The frame is galvanised and the steel skins are electrostatically powder-coated. Touch up any deep scratch so bare steel is not left exposed.

Are steel cabins warm in winter?

Yes, with a heater. The walls reach a U-value of 0.46 W/m²K and the roof 0.26 W/m²K, so the heat stays in; we confirm heating options in your written quote. Try our winter warmth calculator.

Do steel cabins get condensation?

Insulated sandwich panels keep the inner skin warm, which limits condensation. Heat the cabin evenly and ventilate it, especially when wet clothes are drying inside.

Can I get an anti-vandal steel cabin?

Our standard cabins already have steel-faced panels on a galvanised frame and a lockable door. Ask in your inquiry: we confirm which further security options we can fit to your cabin and price them on your quote.

Is a steel cabin the same as a shipping container?

No. Our steel cabins are built as insulated buildings from the start, with sandwich-panel walls and PVC double glazing. A shipping container is a bare steel box that needs lining, insulating and cutting for windows. Our purpose-built container offices and buildings avoid that.

Can a steel cabin be moved?

Yes. The frame is bolted, not welded, so the cabin can be lifted by crane lorry, or dismantled and rebuilt elsewhere.

Do I need planning permission for a steel cabin?

Not usually for a cabin serving building work on the same site. Permanent cabins at business premises, and garden buildings with eaves over 2.5 m, normally need permission — check with your council.
