What is a security gatehouse?

Historically, a gatehouse was the fortified building over the entrance to a castle, abbey or estate. On a modern site the meaning is practical: the security gatehouse, or guardhouse, is the staffed building at the vehicle or pedestrian gate where your team controls who comes in and out. Some sites simply call it the gate hut. For smaller posts, compare the full range of security cabins and security huts.

A gatehouse differs from a one-person guard hut in scale and role. It is usually staffed by one or two people on full shifts, holds the site's paperwork, keys and screens, and is often the first thing a visitor sees. That is why gatehouse cabins start at about 2.1 × 2.1 m and why appearance matters more here than anywhere else on site. For single-guard posts, see guard booths.

Modern security gatehouse design

A good gatehouse is designed from the guard's chair outwards. In your inquiry, tell us where the lanes are, which side vehicles stop on, and where the barrier, intercom and cameras will go. You then fix door and window positions on the drawing we send with your quote.

Position matters as much as the building. Put the gatehouse where the guard's window meets the driver's window — on an island between the lanes, or on the driver's side of the incoming lane — and leave room for a lorry to stop clear of the public road while it is checked.

  • Sight lines: windows on three or four sides, so staff see both lanes and the footpath without leaving the desk.
  • A sliding window or serving hatch on the lane side for passes, delivery notes and visitor sign-in.
  • A canopy roof with lights on canopy and composite gatehouses, so the entrance is marked after dark.
  • Room for two: a desk run for monitors and a second chair from 2.10 × 2.10 m.
  • A finish that matches the building: white GRP, stone-effect canopy cabin cladding or aluminium composite gatehouse panels, with colour and branding options we confirm in your written quote.

GRP, panel or composite gatehouse cabins

All four builds arrive insulated, glazed and wired. The difference is the shell, the look, and the weight the delivery crane has to lift — which matters if the gatehouse must go over a fence or into a tight entrance.

Portable gatehouse advantages: own it, move it

A portable security gatehouse is a finished building that happens to be movable. It arrives in one piece on a lorry with its own crane (HIAB), sits on a concrete slab, paving or four level concrete pads, and needs only an electrician to connect the supply. When the entrance moves — a new phase of a build, a new yard layout — the gatehouse moves with it.

Owning also makes sense because an entrance is rarely temporary. Hire charges run every week the cabin stands; a bought gatehouse is a one-off cost that carries your colours and stays an asset you can relocate or sell on.

A temporary gatehouse, or one inside an existing site, often needs no planning permission. A permanent gatehouse at a public entrance may — check with your council, and we can supply drawings for an application.

  • Arrives assembled, glazed and wired — no traditional foundations
  • Bolt it down to the base on exposed sites
  • Moved again by crane lorry when the site changes

What a gatehouse must support: security duties on each shift

Gatehouse security staff do far more than lift a barrier. Plan the cabin around the tasks of every shift and it will work for years; forget one and you end up with a monitor balanced on a window sill.

  • Checking passes and signing in visitors — a sliding window at the lane and desk space for a visitor book or tablet.
  • Logging vehicles and deliveries — a clear view of number plates in both lanes.
  • Operating barriers and gates — sockets for the barrier controller and intercom; extra sockets and cable entries are options we confirm in your written quote.
  • Watching CCTV — a desk run for screens, set back from the lane-side glazing.
  • Key and radio control — clear wall space for a key cabinet and chargers.
  • Long shifts — insulated walls and roof, a heater option, and in the 2.60 × 2.60 m panel cabin, room for a WC.

Why buy your gatehouse from us

Our products are used in over 140 countries. Production is ISO 9001:2015 and CE certified, and every gatehouse has a 12-month warranty against manufacturing and assembly faults.

Every GRP, panel, canopy and composite gatehouse leaves the factory with PVC double-glazed windows, a lockable door, LED lighting, double sockets, a small consumer unit and a hard-wearing vinyl floor, so the price you see covers a building that is ready to staff.

GRP gatehouse cabins are popular at stadium gates, car parks and bus depots. They arrive fully assembled and can be set on simple blocks. Cabins are built to order, with delivery by crane lorry across Great Britain.

Straight answers

Questions buyers ask us

How much does a security gatehouse cost?

From £4,195 + VAT for a 2.10 × 2.10 m insulated panel guardhouse, £5,890 + VAT for a 2.15 × 2.70 m GRP gatehouse and £8,990 + VAT for a 2.15 × 2.15 m composite gatehouse. Delivery is quoted by postcode.

What size gatehouse do I need for two guards?

From 2.10 × 2.10 m in insulated panel or 2.15 × 2.15 m in a canopy cabin or composite gatehouse. Choose 2.15 × 2.70 m or larger if you also need a desk run for CCTV screens and space for visitors to sign in.

Is a gatehouse the same as a guardhouse?

In practice, yes: both mean the staffed building at a site entrance. 'Gatehouse' stresses where it stands; 'guardhouse' stresses who works in it.

Do I need planning permission for a security gatehouse?

A permanent gatehouse at a public entrance may need it, while a temporary cabin inside an existing site often does not. Check with your local council; we can supply drawings for an application.

What foundations does a gatehouse cabin need?

No traditional foundations: a firm, level concrete slab, paving or four level concrete pads. Canopy and composite gatehouses weigh 1,100–1,900 kg, so we confirm the base and crane access in your written quote.

Can a gatehouse include a toilet?

Yes, in larger sizes — the 2.60 × 2.60 m panel cabin has room for a WC option — or arrange toilets separately.

Can you build a bulletproof gatehouse?

Yes. BR7 bulletproof cabins are built to order from 1.5 × 1.5 m to 3.0 × 5.0 m; the 2.0 × 3.0 m checkpoint size is £59,900 + VAT. See bulletproof cabins.

How long does a gatehouse take to install?

Once it arrives, the lorry's crane lifts it onto the base and an electrician connects the supply. We confirm lead time in your written quote.
