What is a security kiosk?

A security kiosk is a small staffed building at the point where people, vehicles or goods arrive. It is smaller than a gatehouse and more public-facing than a guard post: the person inside checks passes, signs in visitors, takes payments, hands out keys or answers questions through a window or hatch.

Most security kiosks are between 1.35 m and 2.70 m long. That is enough for one or two staff, a desk, a chair and a heater, while still fitting on a pavement edge, a car park island or beside a barrier. Like our other security cabins, every kiosk is factory-built, arrives assembled and is lifted onto its base by the delivery lorry's own crane.

If you need a full-shift guard post rather than a public-facing kiosk, see security huts and guard booths. For a staffed building with room for several people, see security gatehouses.

GRP, insulated panel or composite: which kiosk shell?

The shell decides how the kiosk looks, how much it weighs and what it costs. All three are insulated, glazed and wired when they leave the factory.

GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) kiosks are moulded in one piece, so there are no panel joints to leak or prise open, nothing to rot or rust, and the smooth surface wipes clean. They are the all-rounder for car parks, depots and site entrances. See GRP kiosk cabins for the full GRP range.

Insulated panel kiosks use a galvanised steel frame with sandwich-panel walls. They are the lowest-cost security kiosk and light enough to move between sites with a small crane. See panel cabins.

Composite and canopy kiosks add aluminium composite or stone-effect cladding and a canopy roof with lights. They are heavier and cost more, but they sit well beside offices, hotels and public buildings. See the canopy cabin range.

Serving hatch, transaction window and glazing options

What sets a kiosk apart from a guard post is the counter: the point where staff talk to visitors, check documents or take payment without opening the door. You choose the window layout and door position on the drawing we send with your quote.

  • Serving hatch: a hatch for passing passes, parcels, keys or payments through the window line. It is an option on our GRP kiosks and is confirmed in your written quote; the 1.50 × 2.70 m GRP kiosk is the popular size for it.
  • Sliding windows: PVC double-glazed sliding windows let staff speak to drivers and pedestrians without opening the door.
  • Opening or fixed glazing on up to four sides: for a clear view of a barrier, a footpath and a car park at the same time.
  • Window height: tell us whether staff will mostly serve drivers in cars or people on foot, and we place the window to suit.
  • Lockable door: with a steel or PVC frame, positioned away from the counter side where space is tight.
  • Other options: heater, desk, floodlights and colour or company branding, all confirmed in your written quote.

Where security kiosks work best

The same compact kiosk does different jobs depending on where it stands. These are the most common placements and the size that usually fits.

  • Site and estate entrances: a 1.50 × 1.50 m GRP kiosk for signing in contractors and visitors at the gate.
  • Car parks: an attendant kiosk with a sliding window by the entry lane. For pay booths and weighbridges, see car park kiosks.
  • Barriers: a kiosk facing the lane with the barrier controls within reach. For checkpoints and multi-lane set-ups, see access control booths.
  • Reception points: a composite or canopy kiosk at an office, hospital or campus entrance. For a larger visitor desk, see our reception kiosk sizes.
  • Events and venues: GRP kiosks for stewards and pass checks. Ticket sales are covered on ticket booths.
  • Temporary operations: a light panel kiosk that moves with the job. For building sites, see portable security cabins.

Delivery, base and power

Security kiosks travel fully assembled on a lorry with its own crane (HIAB). The driver lifts the kiosk straight onto your base, so you need clear access for the lorry and no overhead cables near the lift.

The base should be firm and level: a concrete slab, paving or four level concrete pads at the corners. Bolt the kiosk down where it stands in public or on an exposed site.

Every GRP, panel and composite kiosk leaves the factory with an LED ceiling light, double sockets and a small consumer unit. An electrician connects the incoming supply on site. Tell us in your inquiry if the kiosk must also power card readers, a till or screens, and we confirm extra sockets in your written quote.

Straight answers

Questions buyers ask us

How much does a security kiosk cost?

From £2,690 + VAT for a 1.35 × 1.35 m insulated panel kiosk, £3,890 + VAT for a 1.50 × 1.50 m GRP kiosk and £5,595 + VAT for a canopy kiosk. Delivery by crane lorry is quoted by postcode.

What is the difference between a security kiosk and a security hut?

They are the same family of building. A security kiosk is planned around serving the public through a window or hatch; a security hut is a general guard post for full shifts. See security huts.

Can a security kiosk have a serving hatch?

Yes. A serving hatch is an option on our GRP kiosks, confirmed in your written quote. Sliding PVC double-glazed windows are another way to serve visitors without opening the door.

What size security kiosk do I need?

For one person serving through a window, 1.35 × 1.35 m or 1.50 × 1.50 m. For a desk, paperwork or a till, choose 1.50 × 2.15 m or 1.50 × 2.70 m.

Which is better, a GRP or a panel security kiosk?

GRP is a one-piece shell with no joints, ideal for kiosks used every day. Insulated panel is the lowest-cost option and lighter to move. Composite suits entrances where looks matter.

How is a security kiosk delivered?

Fully assembled on a lorry with its own crane. The driver lifts the kiosk onto a level slab or pads, and an electrician connects the supply.

Can the kiosk be in our company colours?

Yes. Colour and company branding are options we confirm in your written quote, along with door and window positions on the drawing.
