Enhancing security with an access control booth

An access control booth is the staffed point where people or vehicles are checked before they enter: at a barrier, a vehicle checkpoint, a turnstile line or a visitor gate. Unlike a general security hut, it is planned around a lane. The operator sits facing the traffic, with the barrier controls, intercom and screens within reach. For the full range of sizes and prices, see our security cabins.

A well-placed control booth speeds entry up as much as it secures it. Drivers stop at the window, show a pass or speak to the operator, and the barrier lifts without anyone stepping outside. Staff in a warm, dry, well-lit booth stay alert through a long shift, and a visibly staffed control point deters casual trespass.

Types of control booth for every entrance

Most access control points fall into one of six types. The shell, the size and the glazing change with the job.

  • Barrier booth: a one-person booth beside a rising-arm barrier at a car park, depot or estate entrance — GRP 1.50 × 1.50 m at £3,890 + VAT, or insulated panel 1.35 × 2.10 m at £3,690 + VAT.
  • Vehicle checkpoint cabin: a longer cabin such as GRP 1.50 × 2.70 m (£4,690 + VAT), with windows onto both the entry and exit lanes.
  • Reception kiosk: a visitor and pedestrian access point at an office, hospital or campus. Canopy and composite cabins match the building; the 2.15 × 2.65 m canopy cabin is our reception kiosk size at £8,790 + VAT.
  • Anti-vandal cabin: for exposed or out-of-hours sites we suggest a one-piece GRP shell, a lockable steel-framed door and bolt-down fixing.
  • Traffic and parking booth: pay points, toll lanes and weighbridge cabins — see car park kiosks.
  • Armoured checkpoint: bulletproof cabins to BR7 for high-risk entrances; the 2.00 × 3.00 m checkpoint size is £59,900 + VAT.

Room and power for your access control systems

Modern access control is mostly electronics: barrier controllers, intercoms, ANPR cameras, card readers, CCTV recorders and screens. The booth has to house and power them without cluttering the operator's desk.

Every GRP, panel and composite booth leaves the factory with an LED ceiling light, double sockets and a small consumer unit. Tell us what equipment the booth must run: extra sockets, cable entries, a desk run for screens and floodlights are options we confirm in your written quote, and door and window positions are fixed on the drawing we send with your quote.

  • Barrier and gate controls: within reach of the seat, on the lane side
  • Intercom and ANPR screen: on the desk under the lane-side window
  • CCTV: screens set back from the glazing; choose a 2.15 × 2.70 m cabin when monitors and a recorder need their own desk
  • Lighting: floodlights on the booth to light the approach, an option we confirm in your written quote
  • Connection: an electrician connects the incoming supply to the consumer unit on site

Design and durability: GRP, panel and anti-vandal cabins

A control booth stands at the busiest, most exposed point of a site, often around the clock. The shell has to cope with weather, knocks from vehicles and, on some sites, deliberate damage.

GRP booths are moulded in one piece: no panel joints to prise open, nothing to rot or rust, and a smooth surface that wipes clean. Insulated panel booths use a galvanised steel frame with steel-skinned sandwich panels — the lowest-cost option and easy to move between sites. Canopy and composite cabins add stone-effect or aluminium composite cladding and a canopy roof, for entrances where the booth must look like part of the building.

For an anti-vandal cabin, combine a GRP shell with a lockable steel-framed door, bolt the booth to its base and keep it lit at night. Where the threat is armed attack rather than vandalism, specify an armoured bulletproof cabin to BR7.

Quick setup and low maintenance

GRP, panel and composite control booths travel fully assembled on a lorry with its own crane (HIAB). The driver lifts the booth onto a concrete slab, paving or four level concrete pads, an electrician connects the supply — no need to close an entrance for weeks of building work.

After that, upkeep is minimal: GRP does not rot or rust and wipes clean, the PVC double-glazed windows need no painting, and every booth carries a 12-month warranty against manufacturing and assembly faults. Our products are used in over 140 countries, with ISO 9001:2015 and CE certified production.

A booth inside an existing site, or a temporary one, usually needs no planning permission; a permanent booth at a public entrance may. Check with your council — we can supply drawings for an application.

Choosing the right booth and getting a custom quote

Start from the job, not the catalogue: how many lanes, how many staff, what equipment, and how the entrance should look.

Larger sites rarely need just one booth. A common set-up is a gatehouse at the main gate with smaller barrier booths at the secondary and exit lanes, all in the same finish. Send us the whole layout and we quote the set together, with a drawing for each booth.

Questions buyers ask us

How much does an access control booth cost?

From £3,690 + VAT for a 1.35 × 2.10 m insulated panel booth and £3,890 + VAT for a 1.5 × 1.5 m GRP barrier booth. BR7 bulletproof checkpoints start at £59,900 + VAT for 2.00 × 3.00 m; delivery is quoted by postcode.

What is the difference between a control booth and a security hut?

They are the same family of building. A control booth is laid out around a lane or barrier, with the operator facing traffic and the controls within reach; a security hut is a general guard post.

Can the booth house barrier controls, intercom and CCTV?

Yes. Lights, sockets and a consumer unit are fitted as standard; extra sockets, cable entries and desk space for screens are options we confirm in your written quote.

What is an anti-vandal cabin?

A booth built to resist damage on exposed or unstaffed sites. For those sites we suggest a one-piece GRP shell with no panel joints to prise open, a lockable steel-framed door and bolt-down fixing. For armed threats, choose a BR7 bulletproof cabin.

Do you make reception kiosks?

Yes. Canopy and composite cabins suit visitor reception at offices and campuses; the 2.15 × 2.65 m canopy cabin is £8,790 + VAT. See canopy cabins.

How is a control booth installed?

It arrives assembled on a crane lorry, is lifted onto a level slab or pads, and an electrician connects the supply.

Do control booths need planning permission?

Often not for a temporary booth or one inside an existing site; a permanent booth at a public entrance may. Check with your council — we can supply drawings.
