Guard booth, guard hut or security post: what you are buying

Guard booth, guard hut, security booth, sentry hut, guard house — and, in American catalogues, 'guard shack'. The name changes with the site and the region, but the job does not: give one or two people a warm, dry, well-lit post with a clear view of the gate, the barrier or the yard. Every booth here is one of our security cabins, sized for one or two people.

What changes is the size. A sentry-style booth of 1.1 × 1.1 m suits a guard who mostly stands and checks passes. A guard hut of 1.5 × 1.5 m takes a desk, a chair and a heater for a full shift. A guard house of 2.1 m and up is a small office for two, with room for screens and paperwork — at that size, see our security gatehouses.

Guard booth prices: what a guard shack costs

Prices below are for the booth itself, ex works and + VAT. Delivery by crane lorry is quoted for your postcode, and we confirm it in your written quote along with lead time. Apart from the built-to-order BR7 booth, every booth here arrives glazed, wired and insulated, so windows, lights and sockets are not extras.

The lowest-cost guard booth is an insulated panel cabin at £2,290 + VAT. The 1.5 × 1.5 m GRP guard hut at £3,890 + VAT is our most popular size for posts staffed every day. Architectural booths with a canopy roof start at £5,595 + VAT, and armoured BR7 booths at £39,900 + VAT.

The price moves with three things: size, shell and options. Extra windows, a serving hatch, a heater, a desk, floodlights and colour or company branding are options we confirm in your written quote. When you compare quotes from other suppliers, check that glazing, electrics and insulation are included — on our GRP, panel and composite booths they are standard.

Buy or hire a guard booth?

Hire looks cheap for the first month. But hire charges run for as long as the booth stands, and many security posts stay in place for years. A bought guard booth is a one-off cost: it stays on your books as an asset, it carries your colours and layout, and when the contract or the site moves, a crane lorry moves the booth with it.

A simple test: divide the price of the booth by the weekly hire rate you have been quoted. That is roughly the number of weeks after which buying costs less, before delivery. If the post will be staffed for longer than that, buy.

  • Buy when the post is permanent, or will be needed site after site — a 1.5 × 1.5 m GRP hut weighs about 280 kg and lifts straight onto the next job.
  • Buy when the booth faces the public and should carry your colours or logo.
  • Buy a spare: panel booths from 100 kg are light enough to store and redeploy when a new gate opens.
  • Hire only for a one-off event of a few weeks where you will never need a booth again.

Why a prefab guard booth beats building one

A site-built guard house needs foundations, several trades and drying time, usually at the one entrance you cannot close. A prefabricated guard booth is built and wired in the factory, checked, then delivered in one piece. The lorry's own crane lifts it onto a slab or four level pads, an electrician connects the supply.

  • Factory quality: production is ISO 9001:2015 and CE certified, not dependent on the weather on your site.
  • No wet trades at the gate: no bricklaying, plastering or waiting for concrete walls to cure.
  • Movable: lift the booth to a new position when the site layout changes.
  • Fitted as standard on GRP and panel booths: PVC double-glazed windows, a lockable door, LED light, double sockets and a small consumer unit.
  • Low upkeep: one-piece GRP shells have no joints to leak, do not rot or rust, and wipe clean.

Security booths for every role

The same booth does very different jobs depending on where it stands. These are common uses and the model that usually fits each one.

  • Construction site gates: a panel booth or GRP hut that moves with each phase of the build; add a site cabin for welfare.
  • Warehouses, depots and industrial estates: a GRP guard hut by the yard gate or weighbridge — see the 150 × 150 cm guard hut.
  • Car parks: an attendant booth with a sliding window beside the barrier — see car park kiosks.
  • Barrier and checkpoint lanes: booths laid out around barrier controls, intercoms and CCTV — see access control booths.
  • Offices, hotels and residential estates: canopy cabin or composite booths with a canopy roof that match the building.
  • Stadiums and events: GRP booths for stewards, pass checks and ticket sales — see ticket booths.
  • High-risk sites: bullet-resistant guard booths — our bulletproof cabins are built to order to BR7.

Straight answers

Questions buyers ask us

How much does a guard booth cost?

From £2,290 + VAT for a 1.10 × 1.10 m insulated panel booth and £3,890 + VAT for a 1.5 × 1.5 m GRP guard hut. Architectural booths start at £5,595 + VAT and BR7 bulletproof booths at £39,900 + VAT; delivery is quoted by postcode.

What is the difference between a guard booth, a guard hut and a guard house?

Mostly size. A booth or sentry hut is a one-person post of about 1.1–1.5 m, a guard hut takes a desk for full shifts, and a guard house or gatehouse is 2.1 m and up, for two people.

Is it cheaper to buy or hire a guard booth?

Divide the purchase price by the weekly hire rate: beyond roughly that many weeks, buying costs less. For a post staffed for months or years, or moved from site to site, buying usually wins.

How quickly can a guard booth be on site?

Lead time depends on size and options, and we confirm it in your written quote. Once delivered, the booth is lifted onto its base by the lorry's crane.

What base does a guard booth need?

A firm, level surface: a concrete slab, paving or four level concrete pads at the corners. Bolt the booth down on exposed sites.

Do you sell bullet-resistant guard booths in the UK?

Yes. Our bulletproof cabins are built to order to BR7, from £39,900 + VAT for 1.5 × 1.5 m. See bulletproof cabins.

Can a guard booth have a heater or a toilet?

A heater is an option we confirm in your written quote. For a WC, choose a larger cabin or arrange toilets separately.

Can the booth be in our company colours?

Yes. Colour and company branding are options we confirm in your written quote.
